Food IntoleranceThe issue of food intolerance has received a lot of discussion in recent years, and it seems to be a growing problem for many of us. An 'intolerance' is less than an allergy, but describes a situation where a particular food or type of food is poorly tolerated, leading to symptoms such a bloating, indigestion, constipation, skin rash, phlegm production etc. many people who have food intolerances are diagnosed with IBS. Common intolerances are to dairy products and wheat. Any food intolerance is the result of a weakened digestive system, which could be the result of poor diet, bad eating practices, illness, systemic weakness or other factors. Often the digestion is so weak that there are problems even on a very good diet of nutritious healthful food. These are normally complex problems, and so they need an integrated holistic treatment. A nutritional analysis is important, of course, and any particularly bad foods can be identified, and some helpful foods which you can increase consumption of. You may be asked to try cutting out certain foods completely - this is easier than it sounds, and you will be given plenty of advice about alternative foods and different ways of working with this process. The digestion needs to be strengthened over a period of time, and this involves some dietary 'tweaks', acupuncture and/or tui na massage treatment and possibly herbs depending on your circumstances and preferences. Approaching the problem in this way from a number of different angles at the same time is very effective, and gradually the digestion improves and is able to cope with more. As nutritional uptake increases in has a knock on effect on overall health and wellbeing, improving energy levels, sleep, immunity and lots more.
