Multiple Sclerosis (MS)Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the body's own central nervous system, leading to damage to the nerves. When this happens the nerves are not able to function properly. Because the nervous system is involved in pretty much all bodily process, symptoms are many and varied, differing from one person to the next. Changes in sensation, muscle weakness and difficulties with coordination and balance are common. Problems with the speech or vision, pain and fatigue, depression or mood swings and bladder or bowel problems are all possible. So called 'Disease Modifying Medication' such as interferon injections can slow the progress of the disease, but do not cure it. Side effects can be similar to influenza, or can include flushing, chest tightness, heart palpitations, breathlessness, and anxiety. Damage to the liver and heart are also possible. The Chinese Medicine treatment for MS is necessarily wide ranging, and is most effective when a number of treatment modalities are used together. The exact Chinese diagnosis will depend on your individual symptoms and experience. Often MS is classified as Wei (weakness) or Bi (pain) syndrome, and often involves Dampness (with symptoms such as heavy limbs, lethargy and a fuzzy head) as well as underlying deficiency in the organs. Acupuncture and tui na massage can both be used to regulate and strengthen the system, relax tense muscles and relieve stress. In Chinese terms they can eliminate stagnation and Dampness and strengthen the Qi. Nutrition can also be very important in this regard, as can Qi Gong breathing and relaxation exercises - your exact treatment plan will depend on your personal preferences and symptoms. By using an integrated approach such as this, it is possible to make a considerable improvement to overall health and well-being and to dramatically slow the progression of the condition, reducing both the severity and frequency of remission. A study of acupuncture treatment for MS in the USA found that those receiving acupuncture reported reduced pain, decreased spasticity, improved bladder and bowel dysfunction, and alleviating tingling and numbness, among other benefits.
