Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)RSI refers to injury to a part of the body caused by repetition of a certain movement. It can effect people who have to repeat a certain task throughout the day, for instance working at a computer, operating a machine or playing a musical instrument. Nerves, muscles and tendons can all be effected, leading to a range of symptoms such as soreness and pain, loss of strength, tingling or pins and needles etc. Common forms of RSI include tennis or golfer's elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome which effects the wrist. In term of Chinese medicine, there is a deficiency and/or stagnation of Qi (energy) and Blood in the area, leading to weakness and pain. Treatment with acupuncture and tui na massage can be used to identify and treat muscle spasm, knots and trigger points in the area, and so reduce pain and improve strength and mobility. Sometimes moxa, cupping or gua sha may also be useful. Acupuncture and tui na are frequently very effective in these conditions, and should always be considered before resorting to surgery or other more invasive measures.
