Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Seasonal Affective Disorder or 'SAD' is a kind of depression that effects people in the winter months. It is believed to be caused by a biochemical imbalance in the part of the brain called the hypothalamus. For some sufferers it is a severe and debilitating disease, for others it is milder and is sometimes called 'winter blues'.

Conventional treatment involves the use of light boxes which emit very bright light similar to daylight, if these are not effective then antidepressants or psychotherapy may be offered.

In term of Chinese medicine SAD is often related to a deficiency of Yang, which becomes more noticeable and severe in the winter time. Yang is the bright, warm motivating force of the body which gives you your 'get up and go' and when deficient it often causes depression and tiredness. Treatment to strengthen the Yang and lift the mood is often very effective, especially when an integrated approach is followed combining acupuncture and/or tui na massage with nutritional advice (dietary therapy), use of moxa, and other treatments as required.

Treatment is best begun before symptoms begin, and then regularly throughout the winter to maintain the beneficial effects.
