Backache, Lumbago, Sciatica

The back is by far the most common place for aches and pains - these can be caused by bad posture, injury, slipped disk, arthritis or structural deformity (eg curvature of the spine), and can be acute (sudden) or chronic (long term.) Muscle relaxant drugs and pain killers may be prescribed by your doctor as a short term solution, but are rarely effective in the long term as they do not effect the cause of the problem.

Nerves branch out from the spine to the rest of the body, and if there is a problem involving the spine or one of the disks then the nerve can also be effected leading to referred pain elsewhere in the body - this is exactly what happens with sciatica where the pain radiates down the leg. Acupuncture for sciatica is particularly effective.

Both Acupuncture and Tui Na massage provide very effective back pain treatment by relaxing the muscles and breaking down knots and tension, and calming over stimulated nerves. Often, problems with alignment of the spine are caused by tight muscles in the back pulling the spine out of shape - tui na massage is very effective in these cases. For chronic cases you may also benefit from some regular stretching, postural correction or other exercises.

Acute back pain treatment is especially effective if received soon after the pain first starts, and improvement is normally noticed immediately after the treatment, although if you have injured yourself you may need to wait a day or two before receiving treatment - please ask if you are unsure.
