CoughingIn Chinese Medicine, coughing is seen as a 'rebellion of Lung Qi' - that is, a disruption to the Qi which is causing it to rise up to the throat and cause cough. There are many possible causes of this 'rebellion' which reflect the many varieties of cough. Chronic or enduring cough is normally the result of weak Lungs, though other organs can also be involved. in these cases there is often weak immunity and susceptibility to colds and flu, or allergies. More acute cases can be the result of Dryness in the Lungs, especially in Autumn, or accumulation of Phlegm. Heat or Cold may also be factors. Each of these factors will result in a different kind of cough and will have a different treatment. for instance, a deficiency cough will be weak, and last a long time. A Dry & Hot cough will be non-productive with a sore throat and maybe a temperature, while a Cold-Damp cough will come with lots of white or clear phlegm that is easy to expectorate. For chronic cases the best approach to cough treatment is to use acupuncture and/or tui na massage to strengthen Lung Qi possibly in combination with nutrition or qi gong breathing exercises. For acute cough, acupuncture or tui na can help to rid the body of phlegm, heat, cold or dryness, and again dietary advice may be of great help. In both cases, the root cause of the cough is identified and treated, and not just the symptoms.
