Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is a condition that can effect any part of the digestive tract from the mouth all the way to the anus, and as such has very different symptoms in different individuals. Abdominal pain, vomiting, indigestion and weight loss are common. Inflammation of the joints, eye problems, skin rashes and ulcers and anaemia are other possible symptoms.

There is no known cure for Crohn's disease by conventional Western medicine, and treatment by medication or surgery can only help to reduce symptoms and prevent relapses. Powerful medication such as corticosteroids and immunomodulators are often used, but carry the risk of serious side-effects.

As every person with Crohn's disease will have different symptoms, the exact diagnosis in Chinese medicine will depend on the individual, and so will the treatment. The Chinese diagnosis will typically involve elements of Dampness (diarrhoea, oozing skin lesions, ulcers) and Heat (burning pain, inflammation, red skin conditions) and also Qi and Blood Deficiency (weakness, anaemia, losing weight) caused by failure to extract the nutrients form food .

The treatment of Crohn's disease needs an integrated approach to combine nutrition, acupuncture, tui na massage and qi gong breathing exercises as required. Alterations to the diet are very important and can lead to significant improvements. At the same time acupuncture treatment for Crohn's can strengthen the digestive system and eliminate Dampness and Heat to relieve symptoms and prevent relapse.

A number of studies have shown that acupuncture treatment of Crohn's Disease can improve quality of life, reduce symptoms and improve general well being. In addition, there has been a significant improvement in al-acid glycoprotein, a marker of bowel inflammation among patients receiving acupuncture.
