DepressionChinese Medicine is a holistic system, and does not draw a distinction between physical health and mental or emotional health - all aspects of our health and wellbeing are interconnected and effect each other. Unfortunately, depression is becoming more and more common, and conventional Western medicine often fails in its attempts to treat this serious condition. Psychotherapy and antidepressant medication are the 2 main treatments offered, but both have low success rates and there can be significant side effects with medication. Chinese Medicine recognises a wide number of causes and types of mental and emotional disturbance that could be labeled as 'depression' and the individual Chinese diagnosis will depend on the exact signs and symptoms. For instance, depression can be categorised as Yang Deficiency when there are symptoms of bodily weakness, lack of motivation and feeling cold, or as Liver Qi Stagnation when there is depression but with bouts of anger or irritability and discomfort or pain in the chest or ribs. Treatment of depression by acupuncture and/or tui na massage can regulate and strengthen the system, working not only on the mental or emotional symptoms, but also treating the root cause. Nutrition can also be invaluable to support this process and in some cases can have drastic effects on its own. There has been a great deal of research on acupuncture for depression, and as a result the UK’s Mental Health Foundation has proposed that acupuncture should be made more available to depressed patients. Acupuncture treatment can significantly reduce the severity of depression and improve overall wellbeing - in one study the participants involved reported feeling more relaxed and calm, having improved sleep, more energy and greater confidence following treatment.
