Eczema

The term 'eczema' covers a wide range of symptoms, including redness, swelling, itching, dryness, flaking skin, oozing, bleeding etc. It is normally found on the flexor aspect (inside) of the joints, but may effect any part of the body.

Conventional Western medicine has very little to offer by way of treatment for eczema. Lotions or creams containing steroids are most commonly prescribed, but side effects to these include thinning and weakening of the skin, skin infections and hormonal imbalances. Additionally, these treatments only suppress the symptoms, which normally return as soon as the medication is stopped.

According to the theories of Chinese medicine, eczema falls into various categories depending on symptoms - Wind leads to itching, Heat to redness, dryness and rashes, and Dampness to oozing. These three aspects will be present at different levels in different people.

Treatment by acupuncture and / or tui na acupressure massage is effective at regulating the body and clearing Wind, Heat and Dampness to calm eczema, and it may be possible to identify dietary measures that may help enormously - some cases can even be resolved entirely with diet. Additionally, herbal creams can be very useful to treat 'from the outside in' while the other treatments focus on the internal imbalance.

By combining acupuncture or tui na with nutrition and natural herbal creams or supplements a very effective balanced treatment plan can be created which works to gradually but effectively reduce eczema and in many cases can clear the condition completely.
