Fatigue, ME, CFS

Many of us suffer with a lack of energy and fatigue ranging from mild to debilitating, and it may result from or accompany a number of other illnesses or be a side effect of medication. Whatever the cause, Chinese Medicine has a lot to offer. Whether ME, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Underactive Thyroid or simply Everyday Tiredness, acupuncture can help to boost energy levels and lift the depression that often accompanies long term fatigue.

As well as helping to increase energy levels, the treatment will focus on any other symptoms that you might be experiencing - with ME for instance there is often muscle ache and a lack of concentration. This kind of disease often follows a flu or viral infection, in which case it is known in Chinese terms as a retained pathogen. Hence the treatment for ME often focuses on ridding the body of the lingering pathogen and strengthening the immune system.

Both acupuncture and tui na massage can be used to treat fatigue. In both cases the aim is to treat the retained pathogen if applicable, and to balance, strengthen and regulate the Qi. This means working holistically at the root cause of the problem, and not just suppressing symptoms.

As a general rule, the longer the symptoms have been felt, the longer it will take to treat. For most cases treatment should be weekly at first, changing to fortnightly and then monthly as things progress. Diet is often a crucial element, and specific dietary advice can be used to maximise the amount of energy that the body is able to derive from food while reducing consumption of foods which lead to feelings of sluggishness or take a lot of energy to digest.

There may also be specific Qi Gong & breathing exercises that can be very effective as part of the treatment of fatigue. If you are interested in this area you can be shown some simple exercises to practice at home.

As treatment progresses, you can expect an increase in your energy levels, better quality sleep, a lighter outlook and an overall improved sense of wellbeing.
