Frozen ShoulderFrozen Shoulder (or technically 'adhesive capsulitis') is a common condition that describes a lack of movement of the shoulder. There is stiffness and pain in the joint, and movement may be slightly or completely restricted. In severe cases there may be no movement at all. The causes of frozen shoulder are poorly understood by conventional Western medicine and treatment involves pain killers or surgery, or for mild cases, simply waiting for it to pass on its own - though this can take months or even years. Corticosteroid injections may be offered, but although they can be very effective in the short term they do not address the underlying problem which will often return after a few weeks. They also have side-effects and so are limited in number to 2 or 3 injections. The Chinese medicine treatment for frozen shoulder involves either acupuncture or tui na massage or a combination of the 2, which is especially effective. They help to reduce pain and relax tight and spasmed muscles and gradually restore movement. Moxa, cupping and / or gua sha may also be useful treatments.
