Inducing Labour

Postmaturity, or post-date pregnancies are defined as those which have gone on longer than 42 full weeks. While there is a natural variation in the length of pregnancy from one baby to the next, there are concerns with post maturity as complications can arise.

Labour can be induced through a variety of methods, including a oxytocin drip, and prostaglandin (Prostin) gel or pessary, manually breaking your waters or separating the amniotic sack from the wall of the uterus. Side effects of these procedures can include very strong contractions, lowering the babies heart rate, increased risk of infection and problems with the umbilical cord.

Acupuncture provides a natural way of inducing labour without these risks. Certain acupuncture points have what is called a 'downbearing' action - that is, they provide the stimulus for the strong downwards action that is required for labour. Provided your body is ready to begin labour, acupuncture can provide the initial stimulus required to begin the process naturally. This normally occurs in the 24 hours following acupuncture treatment.

If you don't like the thought of acupuncture, or are needle phobic, it is also possible to perform this same procedure using acupressure.
