Irregular / Infrequent PeriodsThe natural cycles of life are under the influence of the Liver in chinese medicine, including problems around menstruation such as irregular or infrequent periods. The regularity of menstruation is seen as one of the most important factors, and is itself seen as an indicator of good health. Whether the cycle is long or short is of less importance so long as it is regular. Irregular periods are often associated with stress and hormonal imbalance, and can often occur after stopping the contraceptive pill (especially if you have been taking it for some time.) Irregular periods are frequently accompanied by symptoms of PMS. Infrequent periods can be associated with overall weakness and deficiency, excessive physical work (for instance with athletes) or poor diet. Periods are normally very light. There may be accompanying symptoms of dry skin, insomnia or digestive problems. The treatment for all menstrual irregularities is based on individual signs and symptoms, to address the root cause of the problem. Acupuncture and / or tui na massage can be used to regulate the hormonal system, reduce stress, and balance and regulate the Liver and nutritional advice can be useful in cases where the diet is lacking (especially for vegetarians.)
