Menopause

In the West it is generally considered 'normal' for women to experience symptoms of the menopause, however, as a natural part of a woman's life, the menopause is seen in Chinese medicine as a smooth and easy transition, and should be without any unpleasant or difficult symptoms.

The most common symptoms of menopause are hot flushes and night sweats. Anxiety, insomnia, urinary problems and vaginal discomfort are also possible symptoms.

Chinese Medicine describes most of these symptoms, especially night sweats and hot flushes as Yin Deficiency. As women age it is natural for the Yin levels to decrease, which leads to an abundance of hot Yang energy in the body - this is something like not having enough coolant in a car, which then overheats.

Fortunately, these symptoms respond very well to treatment by Chinese medicine. Any combination of acupuncture, tui na massage and simple dietary alterations can be used to regulate the hormonal system and in Chinese terms, to nourish the Yin leading to a considerable or complete reduction of symptoms.

A Chinese study on the effects of acupuncture treatment for hot flushes found that it was as just as effective in controlling them as HRT, with levels of FSH decreasing significantly and levels of PGE2 increasing significantly in both the acupuncture and HRT groups.
