Miscarriage

Chinese medicine categorises miscarriage as coming from either the mother or the foetus. In the first instance it is an indication that there is a weakness of blockage in the mother's Qi which means that the pregnancy cannot progress. If the mother is weak, or has deficient Kidney Essence or Blood to nourish the growing foetus, or if she contracts a fever, then miscarriage can result. In these cases it is possible to strengthen and regulate the mother's Qi before and during pregnancy to minimise the possibility of miscarriage.

In the second case a weakness or abnormality in the foetus can cause miscarriage. In this case it is important to strengthen both partners before the next pregnancy to ensure the sperm and egg are in good condition. When the Qi of the mother and father is strong, naturally the baby's Qi is also strong, and the chances of a viable pregnancy are improved.

Acupuncture or tui na massage treatment can regulate menstruation and ovulation, improve egg and sperm quality and nourish the womb and growing foetus. By using points which have an 'ascending' quality, the Qi is prevented from moving downwards and causing miscarriage. The principles of Chinese Nutrition can also be applied, to improve the mother's health and ensure that both mother and baby are receiving adequate nourishment.
