Nausea & VomitingThere are many causes of nausea and vomiting, for instance food poisoning, travel sickness and morning sickness. Nausea and vomiting can also occur as the side effect of medication of following surgery. In some cases acute vomiting is appropriate so long as it does not last too long (for instance with food poisoning where it is important to allow the bad food to come out of the system.) However, there are many cases where it is helpful to control nauseous feelings and prevent vomiting. According to the theories of Chinese medicine, nausea and vomiting are due to rebellious Stomach Qi caused by either weakness of or obstruction to the digestive system. Stomach Qi cannot descend as it normally would, so instead it rebels upwards, causing vomiting and feelings of nausea. For instance, if there is overall weakness of the digestive system there may also be symptoms of tiredness, diarrhoea, indigestion and wheezing, while if there is obstruction to the digestion by Dampness there may be bloating, muzzy head, catarrh, a sticky taste in the mouth or the feeling of heavy limbs. Acupuncture and tui na massage can all help to regulate and strengthen the digestive system and descend Qi to prevent these symptoms by working on the root cause. There are a number of points which can be used with acupuncture to reduce nausea and vomiting, and some of these are also very effective to use at home with simple acupressure on a day-to-day basis. A systematic review of the evidence on acupuncture for post-operative nausea and vomiting has been carried out by the Cochrane institute, who found that acupuncture is as successful as routine anti-sickness medication and is both cheaper and has fewer side effects For more information, or to book your 15 minute free consultation, just call or email nausea and vomiting treatment in bristol, portishead, usk, crickhowell - acupuncture, tui na massage |
