Parkinson's DiseaseParkinson's Disease (or 'PD') is a degenerative condition of the central nervous system. Symptoms are a slowing of movement, rigidity and tremors. The mood, thought processes and speech are sometimes also effected. There are 2 broad types of this condition - 'Secondary PD' can be caused by a head injury or poisoning, but far more common is 'primary PD' which has no known cause. Conventional Western medicine has no cure for Parkinson's, and uses medication as the main way to reduce symptoms. Medications aim to increase the levels of Dopamine in the brain, as this is lowered in people with Parkinson's. L-dopa, which converts to Dopamine in the body, is often prescribed often alongside other drugs to increase it's effectiveness. Dopamine agonists or MAO-B inhibitors are other kinds of drugs that are also used. Unfortunately, all have the risk of significant side-effects. If medication is ineffective, brain surgery may be offered. Alongside medication, a number of other forms of treatment may be of use, including speech therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Chinese medicine has a lot to offer alongside conventional approaches to treating Parkinson's Disease. According to Chinese medical theory this kind of disease is related to the 'liver wind' with underlying weakness of Qi. Internal Wind is said to causes unexpected movement in the body such as tremors and shaking, and is the main disease factor in this case. Acupuncture treatment for Parkinson's and can improve muscle and ligament function, reduce tremors and relieve pain. Tui Na massage can improve muscle rigidity, akinesia (lack of movement) and neural system functions. By regulating the whole body, strengthening the Qi and 'clearing Wind' overall health and well-being can be significantly improved. Additionally, dietary advice and relaxation or Qi Gong breathing exercises can be very helpful to do at home. In one study on acupuncture for Parkinson's, 85% of patients reported improvement of individual symptoms including tremor, walking, handwriting, slowness, pain, sleep, depression, and anxiety, and with no adverse effects.
