Spinal & Postural Problems

Problems of the posture come in may varieties, and have many causes. There may be a structural issue from birth or as a result of injury, or very commonly postural problems come about due to long term misuse of the body - slouching, sitting badly etc.

Kyphosis, scoliosis and lordosis refer to conditions where the spine is not straight. Kyphosis is an exaggerated curve at the top of the spine, leading to hunched shoulders and a 'hump back'. Lordosis is an exaggerated curve at the base of the spine and is common in women following pregnancy. Scoliosis is side to side curve in the spine that makes a 'C' or 'S' shape when viewed from behind. All three can be the result of bad posture or repeated strain on the body, and each sets up a characteristic pattern of tightness of certain muscles and over-relaxation or weakness of others.

For any postural problem, an imbalance in muscular strength or tightness can cause the skeleton to be pulled in an un-natural angle leading to a number of problems including pain, stiffness, discomfort etc. A combination of acupuncture treatment and / or tui na massage and simple exercises can help to relax the tightness and spasm and strengthen weakness. Once these issues are addressed the skeleton is allowed to return to its natural position and as posture improves, accompanying symptoms naturally reduce, leading to increased flexibility and movement and a reduction in pain and discomfort.
