PsoriasisPsoriasis is a skin condition in which areas of skin become inflamed, red and scaly. The appearance is typically of a raised, red area of skin covered in a silvery white coating, though there are many types of psoriasis and the symptoms vary from one individual to the next. It normally effects the extensor (outside) aspect of joints, but can appear anywhere. Roughly 10-15% of cases also have inflammation of the joints. There is no consensus in conventional medicine about the causes or treatment of psoriasis, and treatments are of limited effect. Topical creams containing corticosteroids, coal tar, vitamin D3 and other ingredients are often tried first, but have the disadvantage of irritating normal skin, can be awkward to apply, cannot be used for long periods, can stain clothing or have a strong odour. Corticosteroid creams also cause a flare up of the condition as soon as the cream is stopped. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can help in some cases but has potential side effects of itching or burning, nausea, headaches and, with long term use, skin cancer. In severe cases immune suppressant drugs may be used - these are potent drugs, and must be used with care as they are associated with serious side effects such as liver or kidney damage, bone marrow suppression, hypertension and hair loss. The Chinese medicine approach to psoriasis takes a holistic view, and an integrated approach to treatment. Depending on your symptoms, the condition may be diagnosed as any combination of Wind, Damp, Dryness or Heat. For instance, very red and dry skin might correspond to Dryness and Heat. The treatment for psoriasis may comprise any combination of acupuncture, tui na massage, nutrition / dietary advice, breathing / qi gong exercises & herbal skin cream, depending on symptoms and personal preferences. By combining these methods it is possible to regulate the hormonal and immune systems, reduce inflammation, clear heat and reduce stress. As a chronic and deep rooted condition, a course of treatment will be required.
