Stress & AnxietyStress is the way you deal with pressure placed on you. A little stress at appropriate times can be a helpful and important motivator to help you get things done, but prolonged stress, or stress at the wrong times, can lead to physical mental or emotional problems. Enduring stress or anxiety puts the body in a permanently heightened 'fight or flight' state caused by high levels of cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline in the blood. This can lead to irritability, poor sleep, lack of concentration, low energy levels, digestive problems. drinking or smoking more, sweating etc. Prolonged stress can also lead to depression. Conventional Western medicine has little to offer by way of prevention of stress, and few practical treatments. Sedatives or antidepressants are frequently offered, and may help in the short term but do nothing to deal with the causes of stress and can have side-effects. Counseling can be beneficial but may not be suitable for everyone. Traditional Chinese medicine looks at stress and anxiety as a 'Yang' condition - that is, one of over stimulation. in the terms of Chinese medicine, this is commonly caused by pathogenic Fire or by lack of Blood or Yin - The cooling, calming qualities of the body and mind are lacking, leading to a kind of 'overheating'. This Heat can sometimes build up and then flare up suddenly, leading to panic attacks. Treatment aims to reduce the stimulating Heat and restore normal balance. Using acupuncture for anxiety is very effective, along with Tui Na massage. Either treatment can be used for stress relief, relaxing and calming body and mind. Sometimes it is helpful to teach you some qi gong breathing exercises or relaxation techniques to practice at home. There may be dietary factors that can help too. By following an integrated approach such as this, stress and anxiety can be managed and then reduced, leading to better health and well being on all levels.
