TMJ

Temoromandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ or TMD) is a loose term that covers a wide range of problems mainly affecting the jaw, teeth and ear. Symptoms include tenderness or pain, a clicking sound on movement of the jaw, tooth grinding or clenching (often during sleep) and trismus (inability to open the jaw fully.)

The causes of TMJ are many and varied, and so too are the conventional treatments. Often in less serious cases no treatment is offered. Depending on the perceived cause of the problem you may be offered muscle relaxant or pain relieving drugs or an oral splint or 'bite plate' to prevent tooth grinding.

While these may help to relieve the symptoms for a while, they do not deal with the problem, which frequently re-occurs. Surgery, dental work or injections of pain relieving medication may be suggested to deal with the underlying problem in more serious cases. Needless to say these treatments carry significant risks, and may cause severe pain and permanent jaw damage.

Almost all cases of TMJ have an element of muscular tension in or around the jaw. In many cases there are 'trigger points' or painful areas of muscle that refer pain to a different site. Frequently stress is a factor.

In all these cases, acupuncture and tui na massage can offer a great help by relaxing the muscles around the jaw and surrounding areas to restore the correct alignment of the jaw and teeth. Both treatments are also very effctive in dealing with stress and anxiety which are often underlying causes. Pain and tooth clenching or grinding respond very well to this kind of treatment, with improvements normally seen quite quickly.
